After two years away, Isobel has returned to her husband, Constantin, to end things. He's an Italian marchese and businessman. She's from a small mining town. They married despite their different social statuses, but her husband's personality changed and she refused to stay with him if they didn't love each other. She was no longer the same woman she had been two years ago. And yet her eyes were still drawn to Constantin's powerful charms. He asks for a reconciliation and kisses her passionately. But Isobel just can't understand why he would want to reconcile when he doesn't love her.
